Protect people before protecting the vehicle

Find a pickup point another person can understand
An exact street address is useful, but it is not the only option. A cross street, interstate direction, exit number, business, hotel, parking lot, shopping center, apartment community, or visible landmark can provide a starting point.

Describe what the vehicle does now
Share the year, make, model, and what happened immediately before the problem. Explain whether the engine turns over, warning lights appear, a tire is flat, the vehicle is leaking, wheels are damaged, keys are available, or the vehicle can roll, steer, brake, and shift into neutral.
A clear symptom is more useful than an uncertain diagnosis. Saying “the lights come on but the engine only clicks” gives the service provider more information than simply saying “the battery is dead.”

Roadside assistance or towing?
Roadside assistance may fit
A weak battery, usable spare tire, empty fuel tank, or keys locked inside may fit a common roadside service when the location is safe and the vehicle details match.
Towing may fit
Mechanical failure, unsafe damage, a vehicle that remains inoperable, or a situation that cannot be handled safely where it sits may require light-duty towing.
Recovery needs a separate review
A vehicle off stable pavement, buried in sand or mud, or positioned in a ditch may require a case-specific winch-out review.
